How to Parallel Park

Whether it’s a busy streety downtown or a crowded residential curb, practice following these steps to parallel park confidently every time.

  1. Approach the space where you want to park and check behind you for other vehicles.
  2. Leave one meter of space between you and the vehicle you are parking behind. Stop when the rear bumper of your vehicle is in line with the rear bumper of the vehicle ahead of the space you want to park in and put your vehicle in reverse.
  3. Look over your right shoulder to make sure the space is clear, and then slowly reverse straight back about ONE meter.
  4. When your shoulder is lined up with the rear bumper of the car you’re parking behind, check over your left shoulder for passing road users and turn one right revolution.
  5. Find a 45-degree angle to the curb and then turn ONE left
  6. Do a 360 scan.
  7. Look behind you and back up until your vehicle is close to the curb. Turn ONE LEFT and move slowly back until your vehicle is parallel with the curb. Move forward while you straighten your wheels.
